A love story
Dave and I met for the first time on October 18 at a Friday night at the institute Dance. I was with my good friend Ann Munk and she had ridden with me to the dance. At the end of the night she had met a friend, Jerry Jones, and made plans to ride home with him. (A better offer was always welcome!) Well, I was introduced to Jerry and his old missionary companion, David Larsen who was with his date. We all said Hi and off I went.
One month later, Nov 18, ( I just turned 19) , I was again at” Friday Night at the Institute” at the Dance and I was running around making arrangements for our upcoming Lambda Delta Sigma Girls Choice dance the following Friday. I was the line up chairman. I had just found out that I had lined up 2 guys with the opposite girls than I intended and was sitting with my head on my hands trying to figure the whole thing out when Dave ask me to dance. He reintroduced himself and we danced. We kept dancing about 5 or 6 more dances till I was clearly swept off my feet and he suggested we go out for “some air”. We walked outside and talked like we had known each other forever. All of a sudden he turned my face to his with his hand and plastered a kiss right on my lips. Yummy! I think we kissed a couple of times then went back in to the dance. He asked me out to the Homecoming dance that next Saturday and he decided to follow me home to see where I lived. When we got home he kissed me again and I floated in the house. He called the next day and came over the next day. When he came to the door I told my mom to answer the door so she could see the hunk picking me up. She came into my bedroom to tell me he was here and was clearly in love with him herself. (Oh yes he was a keeper!)I always said I wanted a return missionary with a moustache and a hairy chest! Hummmmm~! Well, I still hadn’t ask myself a date for Friday so instead of asking Steve the ballroom dancer I lined him up with someone else and ask Dave. He said yes and so I got busy making a new dress for Friday and one for Saturday. By Friday Dave and I were best of friends and we hosted a big turkey dinner at my house for a bunch of couples going to the dance with us. We got our picture taken and looked so cute together. Dave wasn’t much of a dancer and I did eyeball Steve the ballroom dancer, dancing so smooth…. But Dave was enchanting and I was hot for him. HE started coming over every day after that. Fall will always be a special time of year for me! We would go to the USU games and to JB’s for a Hamburger with TLC and we would make out downstairs and watch TV some days. We would go for an Icee… they were the new thing in town and I just loved them. Then we would go to K-mart and pull the baby beans dolls string cause it said I love you and we thought that was so cute. Dave wore Roman Brio cologne and he smelled soooooo good. He just didn’t go away. One day another guy named Bob ask me out and I said yes so when Dave ask me out that night too I had to tell him I had another date and to wait till I got home to come over. He kindly waited. December 18th after a heart to heart talk he knelt in my basement and asked me to marry him. He asked if we could pray together and then he ask me to pray about it and let him know. Did I ever pray! The next evening we were on our way up to Preston Idaho to watch him play church basketball and I told him I had prayed and would love to marry him. He almost drove off the road! Just kidding! But let me tell you he sure played basketball good that night. Since he introduced me to a few friends as his finance we decided to hurry and “ask my dad” and tell his parents too. Whoo… Well Dave didn’t exactly ask him if he could marry me he got my mom and dad in the kitchen and ask for their blessing as “we were going to get married” …my dad cried… I’m not sure if he was so thankful to get rid of me or if he thought his little girl may be very happy. My mom was already in love with Dave so he had her in the bag. We decided to go look at rings the next day. I went window shopping that day without him because I had never even looked at rings. Had no clue what I liked and didn’t want to look to dumb in front of my finance. He didn’t know I had looked that day. When he got there he said he had credit at Needams Jewelry from his last engagement so we would go there first. Well I hadn’t looked there so we went there and I found 3 I liked in the price range he set. He wanted me to pick it out but I wanted a surprise so I wouldn’t pick. He said well take that one. I said ok and we got it sized and it would be ready to pick up the next day. Big surprise! We were going to his work party that next night so I thought he would pick it up and surprise me with it. Nope. We picked it up together and I wore it to the party. Its ok I was so in love I didn’t realize I didn’t have a big story to tell till years later. He was, after all, so handsome and such a good guy. We saw each other every day and had a fun Christmas together. I went to his home for Christmas and we got stuck in the snow on the way up there. We had to walk a mile the closest home (to his former finances home) to get a tractor to get our car out of the snow. Well, that’s another story! We enjoyed planning the wedding and we were married May 1, 1975 in the Logan temple for time and all eternity. We have 6 wonderful children and we are still in love…. To be continued!
